Does salt air damage garage doors?
Yes. Salt-laden marine air is the main reason garage door hardware fails early in Oceanside, and it works on the moving steel long before anything shows on the paint. Torsion springs, lift cables, rollers, hinges, cable drums, bottom brackets and track fasteners all corrode faster here than the same parts do a few miles inland. How much faster depends mostly on how far the door sits from the water.
Why the hardware goes long before the paint does
Salt does not simply sit on steel, it holds water against it. A dried salt film pulls moisture out of humid air, so the surface stays damp on a morning when nothing has rained. Add the marine layer, which leaves hardware wet for hours most mornings, and the metal here spends far more time wet than it does in Fallbrook or Escondido. On a moving part that costs more, because every pit in a spring coil or a hinge barrel becomes a stress point the part flexes across a few thousand times a year until it cracks out of it. That is behind a spring going off like a gunshot overnight, a hinge splitting at the barrel, and a track fastener shearing in the wall.
Lift cables are the worst of it because they hide the damage. A cable is dozens of fine wires twisted into strands, full of narrow spaces that never dry out, so the rot starts in the middle and works outward. A rusting bracket looks terrible for a couple of years first; a cable can look gray and ordinary while a good share of its strength has gone. Two spots matter, with the door shut and your fingers clear of the loop. The lowest few inches, where the cable turns onto the bottom bracket and grit and sprinkler spray collect in the bend. And the top, in the drum groove where damp sits between two steel faces. Anything fuzzy and both cables come off, an estimated $135 to $245 the pair.
Distance from the water sets the pace, and fresh water slows it
The same door with the same hardware ages on completely different timetables depending on the block it stands on. A garage a couple of streets off The Strand, or in the older parts of Downtown, Townsite and South Oceanside, can be on its second set of rollers before an identical door out in Arrowood or Morro Hills has needed anything. East of Interstate 5 the pace drops noticeably, and by Bonsall the coastal factor has largely stopped mattering. Shelter counts too, so a door tucked into an alley behind a bungalow fares better than one facing open ocean. Sand is the other beach problem, filling the bottom foot of the tracks until roller bearings are scored, while steel skins chalk and pit at their cut edges.
Fresh water is the cheapest tool available and it is badly underused. Rinsing the hardware every few weeks, meaning the springs, the shaft bearings, the hinges, the roller stems and the bottom brackets, takes the salt film off before it has a fortnight to draw damp out of the air. Brush both channels out and leave them dry. Ten minutes with a hose and a stiff brush, six or eight times a year, beats anything sold in an aerosol. Specification is the other half: galvanised cable, plated roller stems and sealed nylon wheels add roughly 10 to 20 percent on parts and last materially longer within a mile of the beach. A rust and hardware refresh, an estimated $175 to $395, is often what an older coastal door needs.
