Lift Cables: The Part That Fails From the Inside

Short answer

Lift cables are the two steel wire ropes running from the bottom bracket on each side of the door up to a drum on the torsion shaft. They transfer the spring's pull to the door. Each one is holding roughly half the door's weight the whole time the door is moving. Here on the coast they are the part most likely to fail without giving anyone much warning.

How this part tells you it is failing

  • One side of the door hanging lower than the other, with a top corner wedged in the track
  • A cable lying slack on the floor or coiled loose beside the vertical track
  • Rust colored dust on the concrete directly under one of the bottom corners
  • A cable that has gone from smooth to fuzzy, with fine wire ends catching a cloth
  • The door shudders and jumps at the same point in its travel every time

Why coastal cables give so little warning

A lift cable is not one wire. It is dozens of thin wires laid into strands, and the strands laid into a rope, which is what makes it flexible enough to wrap round a drum. All those gaps between the wires are where salt-laden damp collects and stays, because nothing inside a cable ever dries out. Corrosion therefore works from the core outward. The outside can look gray and unremarkable while the wires down the middle have lost half their section, which is the opposite of the way a rusting bracket behaves.

That is the reason cables here get replaced on age and condition rather than nursed along. Inland a cable frays visibly and gives weeks of notice. A few blocks from the sand it can part with no more warning than a slightly darker patch near the bottom bracket. When one goes, the door drops on that corner, the opposite cable takes everything at once, and the door racks hard enough to come out of its track and twist a section on the way down.

The two places to look

Corrosion is not spread evenly along a cable, so there is no point examining the middle of it. The first place to look is the bottom four inches, where the cable loops onto the bottom bracket at slab level. Water runs down the door and sits there, sprinklers reach it, and the loop traps grit inside the bend where nothing can wash it out. The second is the top, where the cable wraps into the groove on the drum and lies pressed against steel with damp between the two surfaces for hours after a foggy morning.

What you are looking for is texture rather than color. Run a rag down the cable, gently, with the door closed and your fingers well clear of the loop. A sound cable feels smooth and the cloth slides over it. A failing one snags, and you will find fine broken wire ends standing up out of the lay. That is a burr, and it means the rope is already carrying less than it should. Any burr at all makes it a replacement rather than a repair, and both sides come off together.

Why this is not a homeowner job

Cables and springs are one system. A cable is only slack when the door is fully open and the spring has unwound, and in every other position it is holding half the door under full spring tension. Undoing a bottom bracket with the door down releases that tension through a bracket bolted to a panel, and the panel was never built to be the thing that stops it. It is the same reason the bottom bracket is the one fixing on a garage door nobody should put a spanner on.

A proper cable change means the door blocked and clamped, the spring tension wound off with bars, both cables replaced, then the drums re-seated and set so the wrap is equal and the door sits level. Tension goes back in by quarter turns and the balance gets checked by hand at knee height and shoulder height. Getting the drums even is what stops a door running crooked afterwards. A pair fitted runs an estimated $135 to $245, and it is an hour to ninety minutes where nothing has seized.

Galvanised cable, and what else to do at the same time

Cable comes plain or galvanised, and within a mile of the Oceanside coast the galvanised version earns its small premium every time. The zinc gives the wires a sacrificial layer, so the salt works on that rather than on the steel underneath, which is exactly the mechanism you want in a part that corrodes where nobody can inspect it. On the far side of Interstate 5 and out east toward Bonsall the difference narrows, and standard cable does the job perfectly well there.

Timing matters as much as the part. A cable change means the spring tension is already off and the drums are already loose, so it is the cheapest moment to deal with anything else on that shaft: a squealing end bearing, a drum with a worn groove, a spring showing pitting along the coils. Doing those on a separate visit means paying for the same tear-down twice. Ask what the technician can see while the door is apart, and get the answer written on the invoice.
