Safety Sensors: Why the Door Reverses Before It Closes

Safety sensors are the pair of photo eyes mounted about six inches off the floor either side of the opening. One sends an infrared beam and the other receives it, and if anything interrupts that beam while the door is closing, the opener stops and reverses. UL 325 has required a system like this on every residential opener sold in the United States since 1993.

Reading the lights before touching anything
Both sensors carry a small indicator light, and the pair of them tells you most of what you need. The sending eye normally shows a steady light whenever it has power. The receiving eye shows a steady light while it can see the beam, and it goes dark or flickers when it cannot. So the first diagnosis is quick: two steady lights means the beam is fine and the fault is elsewhere, and a dark or blinking receiver means it is not seeing the sender, either through an obstruction or because one of them has moved.
Most openers also count out the fault for you. A LiftMaster or Chamberlain unit flashes its light ten times for a sensor circuit that is broken or blocked, and a door that closes while you hold the wall button but not from the remote is the same story, because holding the button is the deliberate override built into the design. None of that means the opener is failing. It means the door is refusing to close on something it cannot see, which is precisely its job.
Low sun off the water is a real cause
This one is specific to west-facing garages in Oceanside and it catches people out every year. Late in the afternoon the sun sits low over the Pacific and shines straight up the driveway into the opening. Infrared in direct sunlight can swamp a receiving eye so it can no longer pick its own beam out of the background, and the door refuses to close. The clue is the timing. It works all morning and it will not close between about four o'clock and dusk, on clear days rather than overcast ones.
The answer is shade rather than parts. Turning the receiver a few degrees away from the sun, fitting a small hood over it, or swapping which side sends and which receives all deal with it, because the sender does not care about sunlight and the receiver does. Anyone who has bought two sets of sensors for an afternoon-only fault has paid for parts that were never broken. Get the timing of the fault written down before anything is ordered on your behalf.
Salt, sand and the bracket at ankle height
Sensors sit six inches off the floor, which puts them in the worst place on the whole door for corrosion. Salt-laden damp collects at slab level, sprinklers reach them, and blown sand gets thrown at them. The small steel bracket rusts and softens until the sensor can be knocked out of aim by a bike wheel, a bin or a hose reel, and the screws in the jamb loosen the same way. Nothing electrical has failed at that point. The eye is simply no longer looking at its partner.
The lens is the other half of it. A film of salt haze on a photo eye does the same thing fog does, cutting beam strength until the receiver drops out intermittently, and doors that work on some mornings and not others are often nothing more than this. A soft dry cloth on both lenses takes twenty seconds and belongs in anybody's routine near the water. Spider webs across the beam have the same effect and are just as common in a garage that stays shut for weeks at a time.
Alignment, wiring and when it is a real fault
Alignment is a two person job that takes minutes. Loosen the wing nut on the bracket, watch the receiver's light, and move the eye slowly until the light comes on hard and holds, then tighten it without knocking it back out. Both sensors should sit at the same height and both should be square to each other, since they are looking straight down a seven foot gap at a target the size of a coin. If the light only ever comes on weakly, something is still in the beam or the lens still needs cleaning.
Where alignment does not do it, wiring is next, and on this coast it usually is the wiring. Two thin bell wires run from each sensor up to the motor head, stapled along the jamb and across the ceiling, and a staple driven through the insulation years ago corrodes at the copper and starts breaking contact intermittently. That shows up as a fault with no pattern to it at all. A sensor realignment or replacement fitted runs an estimated $75 to $150, including a test of the reversing function.
