Torsion Springs: The Part That Carries the Door

A torsion spring is a length of hardened steel wire wound tightly around a shaft above the door opening. Winding it stores energy, and that stored energy carries almost the entire weight of the door, which is why a 150 pound door feels like ten pounds by hand. The opener only makes up the small difference left over. When the spring breaks, nothing is carrying the door any more.

How much energy is actually in there
Worth understanding before anyone touches it: a wound torsion spring on a double door holds enough energy to move roughly 150 to 250 pounds through seven feet of travel. That energy is in there whether the door is up or down. A door sitting closed on the floor has its spring at full wind, so backing off the set screws on a cone with the door down releases all of it at once, through whatever happens to be holding the cone. That is how people lose fingers and take a winding bar to the face.
Two proper winding bars, sized to the cone, are the only thing that holds that load. The spring comes off in quarter turns with the bars swapped hand over hand and the door clamped in its track. Screwdrivers slip out of a cone under tension, and they are the tool most often involved when this goes wrong. There is no version of the job that becomes safe by being careful, which is why springs sit on the professional side of the line along with cables and drums. Most of the rest of a garage door is fair game for a homeowner with a spanner.
Cycle ratings, and why they matter more here
Spring life is counted in cycles rather than years. One cycle is a trip up and a trip back down, and a standard spring is wound for somewhere around 10,000 of them. A household opening the door four times a day gets roughly seven years out of that on paper. A vacation rental near the Harbour with guests coming and going can spend the same rating in three. High cycle springs rated at 20,000 or 25,000 use thicker wire on a longer coil, they cost more up front, and on a busy door they are the cheaper choice across ten years.
The coastal part is that salt takes cycles off the rating before anybody uses them. Damp settles into the narrow gap between coils where the wire almost touches itself and stays there through a foggy morning, leaving a fine bloom of rust on the surface. Every rough patch becomes a stress point the coil works against on each trip, and the wire eventually cracks out of one of them. That is why a spring a few streets back from an Oceanside beach retires early while the same part, rated the same way, runs its full life out in Fallbrook or Bonsall.
One spring or two, and what sits either side of it
Most doubles run two springs on one shaft, one either side of a center bracket, and most singles run one. Where there are two of the same age, replacing both together is the sensible call, because the survivor has taken identical cycles in identical air. A single torsion spring fitted runs an estimated $185 to $340, and a matched pair an estimated $265 to $470. Galvanised or coated wire adds roughly 10 to 20 percent on the parts line, which is money well spent inside a mile of the water and largely wasted out east.
The spring does not work alone, so a proper job looks at what it turns on. The shaft gets checked for scoring, the center bearing and both end bearing plates get spun by hand for grinding or squeal, the drums get looked at for wear in the groove, and the lift cables get examined, because a corroded cable beside a brand new spring is simply the next failure waiting its turn. Salt often locks the set screws on the cones and the drums, and that is the usual reason a spring change takes longer than the hour anybody quoted.
What running a door on a broken spring costs
The temptation is to keep using the opener until somebody can come out, and what follows is predictable. The motor has no idea the counterweight has gone, so it drags the full weight of the door on a chain and a plastic trolley built to move a balanced load. Drive gears strip, trolleys crack, the rail bends, and the top section can pull away from its brackets. A spring job becomes a spring and opener job, which is the difference between an estimated $265 to $470 and something several times larger.
The safer move is short. Pull the release cord so the opener is disconnected, leave the door exactly where it is, and keep cars and children out from underneath it. If the door is stuck up and the garage is standing open to the street, say so when you call, because it changes how urgent the visit is. A door left halfway is being held by friction and the drums rather than by anything designed for the job, and hauling on it by hand is how the whole weight comes down at once.
